Installation How to

Chapter 1: How to install janabhaaratii Live CD on your computer.

To install janabhaaratii on your computer follow the steps given below:

  1. Make CD-ROM as the first boot device: The CD-ROM must be made the first boot device as the booting must start from the CD. This may already be a default setting. You will come to know if the computer boots from the Live-CD i.e. from the CD-ROM. The procedure is explained below : 1.Insert the CD in the drive. 2.Restart the computer. (The processing starts and a boot prompt appears as shown below) boot : 3.Press Enter. (Processing starts and the janabhaaratii desktop appears.)
  2. Take backup of the important data. Backup is an important step as you will be converting your DOS partition to a NON-DOS partition. Your data may be loss. So backup is recommended. 1.Click on the Terminal icon as shown below.
  3. Type Command : su (Press Enter) 3.Type Command: cfdisk (Press Enter) The partition procedure starts. Please be careful as it is one of the most sensitive procedures. The procedure is explained below.

Note : The size of the partition must be greater than or equal to 2.5GB + space for data, recommended to be not less than 5 GB. 3. Partitioning the Hard Disk Drive (HDD): We have to create 2 logical partitions. ie Linux and Linux swap partitions. Then format both the partitions. Linux partition will be used to install janabhaaratii.

  1. Go to the Delete option and delete the partition in which you have decided to install janabhaaratii by pressing Enter key.

Note: We can switch between options by using the arrow keys (left/right). This is done because janabhaaratii needs a NON-DOS partition and all our partitions are DOS in nature. There will be an increase in our Free Space or creation of Free Space if there is none. Then we get a screen as shown :

We will need basically two types of partitions : i.One ext partition of size 2.5GB. (5GB recommended) ii.One swap partition of size approximately equal to 2 times the size of the RAM in the machine. Example: If we have a RAM of 256MB then let swap memory be 500MB. 2.Select the option New to create a new partition. Click enter. 3.Select the Logical partition by toggling with the arrow keys and then press Enter. 4.Select the Free Space option and press Enter. 5.Type in the size of the partition and press Enter. 6.Then toggle to the Type option to change the type of the Linux partition. 7.Once you have created all partitions you have to change the type of the file system, using Type. 8.Toggle to the Type option an press Enter. 9.Enter the type number 82 for Linux swap. hda7 in our case. 10.You can leave at this point or convert this space into Windows or a Linux partition. We have converted it into a Linux partition. After you are done we have to toggle to the Write option so that the changes are saved.

  1. Type yes and press Enter. 12.Then toggle to quit. Scan, check if partitioning is correct (as per your need), press Enter and restart the system. Command = reboot. 13.Then again open the terminal window and enter the commands one after the other : i.mkfs.ext3 /dev/hdaX (X is the partition in which we will be installed janabhaaratii) (Enter) ii.mkswap /dev/hdaX (X is your swap partition). (Done only once during installing for first time.) (Enter)

By doing so we format the created partitions and prepare them for Installation. Thus we have partitioned the HDD. After creation of partition is over, your system is ready for configuring the installation.

  1. Configuring the Installation Process:
    1. Type "knoppix-installer" in the Terminal. Following screen will be displayed. 2. Now follow the on-screen instructions.

When we are going to install a secure system like janabhaaratii, we have to provide usernames and passwords for authorised access. During configuration single user and its password can be created who can only have the access to his area. Thus a root (administrator's) password is required to be decided who is supervisor of the system. After the configuration is complete, we install janabhaaratii by selecting Start Installation from the main menu and follow the On-screen instructions. It will ask you to select bootloader as: i.mbr (Master Boot Record) ii.partition to boot record.

  2. Installation Process: 1. Select Start installation. 2. Click on Ok and follow the on-screen instructions.
    1. Click on OK.

      Then installation is complete.

    2. Restart your computer. Command = reboot.
